Fair Use

As Robert noted, there isn't much curriculum on copyright and fair use, and teachers don't really know what it's about. Although we do a piece on it in all of our trainings, it will be interesting to see if there will be a demand for a trainer of trainers program that addresses all of the areas in the Chavez legislation.

One thing I'd like to see us suggest for a student curriculum piece are some key questions - how would you feel if... what would you do if... what are the possible consequences of.... Kids definitely have opinions (whether informed or not) about internet safety, plagiarism, peer file sharing, etc. We need to help students engage their critical thinking and problem solving skills as part of the info lit curriculum, because otherwise it's just one more list of do's and don't's we're throwing at them.

I'm definitely interested in

I'm definitely interested in the Fair Use info. Currently working with the Roadside Heritage organization, helping students with enhanced podcasts. The organization and I both need to know more about the interpretations of the laws and also legal sources for fair use/royalty free/??? images and how the laws apply to student made projects which will be accessible on the web.

Jodie - Is this specifically going to be addressed at the Nov TLN?

interesting teaching suggestion

Barbara, an administrator in LA, did an intersting lesson with students - they created internet safety lessons for parents. But then the students began to blog, and she found that they slowly but surely began to engage in risky behavior. The staff had students "rate" blog posts for safety violations, which helped bring students back to the concept. Students then edited their blogs with Internet Safety in mind. As she points out, it's one thing to have students learn a concept, and quite another to have them practice it consistently.

TLN

  • Our next two TLN meetings are focusing on Fair Use, Copyright, Info Literacy - per the Chavez Bill. Kathleen and I are collecting resources, lessons, and training opportunities for educators.

Info Lit training

We should probably be sure to mention to TLN that CTAP is developing a Trainer of Trainers related to the Chavez requirements... and maybe even ask them for input. What about doing a survey monkey asking for ideas?

Polls and surveys

Polls is one of the content type options we could turn on in a DPLC installation.

TLN DPLC

It would make sense to do it on the TLN DPLC in the future... I think that's going to be a very useful feature.
